A 6 foot wood privacy fence is the default for backyards across the Southside, Flour Bluff, Calallen and Portland. It blocks the view, keeps dogs in, and costs less than vinyl or aluminum to put up. The trade-off is upkeep: on the coast, sun, humidity and termites shorten its life unless it is built and maintained well.
Styles
- Side by side (stockade): boards butted together. Cheapest; gaps open as the wood dries.
- Board-on-board: overlapping boards, no see-through gaps, a little more wood.
- Shadowbox: boards alternate on each side of the rail. Looks good from both sides and lets wind through, which helps in a storm.
- Horizontal: a modern look, usually cedar, with closer post spacing so the boards do not sag.
What makes a wood fence last here
- Posts: ground-contact rated treated pine, or galvanized steel posts with wood boards, set in concrete. Steel posts are a common upgrade on the coast because they do not rot and resist termites.
- Fasteners: hot-dip galvanized or stainless nails and screws. Plain steel stains and rusts out quickly in salt air.
- Sealing: a stain or sealer after the wood dries out, then every few years.
