Fence questions
Costs, materials for the coast, permits, HOAs, timing and hiring, plus how this referral service works.
How much does a new fence cost in Corpus Christi?
It depends mostly on the material, the height and the length. Published national cost guides put installed prices at roughly $10 to $40 a linear foot for chain link, $15 to $45 for a wood privacy fence, $15 to $60 for vinyl and $25 to $75 for ornamental aluminum. At those rates, 150 to 200 feet of wood privacy fence works out to roughly $2,300 to $9,000. See the fence cost guide for every material and the sources.
Is this a fence company?
No. Corpus Christi Fence Company is a free referral service. We pass your request to independent local fence contractors, who quote you and do the work. You contract with them directly. The service is free for you; providers may pay us a marketing fee for the introductions. Read how it works.
Which fence holds up best near the water?
Salt air corrodes plain steel and cheap fasteners quickly. Close to the bay or the Gulf, aluminum, vinyl and properly coated steel last best, with stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware. Wood works if posts are rated for ground contact and the fence is sealed and maintained. See the coastal materials guide.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Corpus Christi?
It depends on where the fence goes, how tall it is, and whether it is part of a pool barrier. Check with the City of Corpus Christi Development Services before you build, and with your own city if you live in Portland (which says fences need a permit), Robstown, Kingsville or another town. On corner lots, keep the visibility triangle clear. Many contractors handle any permit for you; ask. See permits and HOA rules.
Does my HOA have to approve a new fence?
Usually. Texas law says an HOA cannot ban a perimeter fence outright, but it can regulate the type of fence, and many Corpus Christi subdivisions set the material, height, color and which side faces out. Check your HOA rules and get written approval before you sign a contract or order materials.
How long does a fence installation take?
A typical residential fence is often built in one to a few days once the materials are on site, with concrete footings left to set before gates are hung. Long ranch runs, automatic gates, permits and HOA approval add time. Ask each contractor for a start date and how long they expect the work to take.
What should I ask a fence contractor before hiring?
Ask for a written quote that lists the material, post size, spacing and depth, concrete, fasteners, gate hardware, removal and haul-off of the old fence, and cleanup. Ask who calls Texas 811 to mark utilities, who pulls any permit, what the warranty covers, and for proof of liability insurance. Agree the payment schedule in writing.
Does a fence contractor need a license in Texas?
Texas has no state license for fence contractors, so licensing cannot tell you who is good. Ask for proof of liability insurance, a written quote and warranty, and recent local references. Wiring a gate opener to power is electrical work that needs a licensed electrical contractor. The City of Corpus Christi runs a voluntary STAR contractor program that checks insurance and background. See permits and HOA rules.
Can you help HOAs, property managers and businesses?
Yes. Describe the scope on the form: the property or properties, rough lengths, the fence and gate types, any access control, and your timeline. Contractors who take commercial work will follow up, often after a site visit.

Include these for a faster, firmer price
- Fence type and height: wood, vinyl, chain link, iron or aluminum, ranch; 4, 6 or 8 ft
- Length: rough linear feet, or the lot size. A sketch of the fence line helps
- Gates: how many, walk or drive, manual or automatic
- Old fence: anything to tear out and haul away
- The site: slope, trees, sprinklers, and which side takes the wind off the bay
- Rules and timing: HOA requirements, a pool, and your time window. Photos help; mention them and the contractor will ask.
