The gate is the part of a fence that gets used every day and fails first. Sagging, dragging and rusted hinges are the most common fence complaints, so it pays to get the gate right.
Choosing a gate
- Walk gates: 3 to 5 ft wide. Ask for a steel frame or anti-sag kit on wood gates, and heavy hinges and latches in galvanized or stainless.
- Double drive gates: 10 to 16 ft openings for driveways and boats, swinging in or out.
- Slide and cantilever gates: for sloped drives, tight spaces or wide commercial openings.
Automatic gates
An opener adds a motor, controls, safety sensors and power, either a line from the house or solar on a ranch. Ask about the opener's duty rating for how often it runs, battery backup for power cuts, and safety: modern openers are expected to meet the UL 325 safety standard and use photo eyes or edges so the gate stops and reverses. Wiring an opener to power is electrical work for a TDLR-licensed electrical contractor (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation).
